Fairleigh Dickinson University
College at Florham – Madison, NJ. This is Where
I go to College.
This Story is my Living Experioence.
Campus
Pictures My Commute to
There
My college Experience at FDU began in 2003. I recently Graduated from Burlington County College After Earning my
Associates Degree entirely through Distance Learning courses. As soon as 2003
came, I applied to several colleges in Northern New Jersey including Fairleigh. I wanted to double major in 2 subject areas that
interest me the most - Psychology and Communication. I heard of Fairleigh Dickinson for a long time. The college was
originally in Rutherford, NJ. The University expanded to two campuses. They purchased the
estate of Florence Vanderbilt & Hamilton Twombly
in Madison, New Jersey. The University also built their Metropolitan Campus on
the Hackensack River in Teaneck, New Jersey. While, I have never been to the Teaneck-Hackensack Campus, I
cannot judge it. Many people still remember the old Rutherford Campus. I am
sure it was nice too. However, I think the Madison Campus is far more popular.
It is closer to me, so I guess that Is why I chose it.
Then again, I wasn't exactly expecting to take full-time classes on Campus. I
wanted to continue my College Education and work on getting a Bachelor's
Degree. Fairleigh Dickinson's Motto is "The
Leader in Global Education." FDU is one of many colleges and universities
that offer distance learning. In addition to that, Fairleigh
Dickinson has a good working relationship with the county colleges,
accepting Transfer students like me. All of the other colleges I
applied to (Rutgers, Seton Hall, Caldwell) accepted me. I Chose FDU because they accepted all of my
credits from my county college, Plus they gave me a
very nice Transfer Scholarship. Probably the most decisive factor was that
they had several online classes.
I applied in February 2003 and Registered for Fall
classes in june 2003. I started in the Fall of 2003
taking three courses fully online. the fourth class
was "blended", meaning you meet on campus on occasion. Well, this
Professor asked to meet each and every Tuesday night. In the beginning, I
thought it was going to be impossible for my parents to drive me from Woodbridge to Morristown at night every week. It
actually turned out to be a positive experience for the family. In the Spring, The same occurred, I took 3 fully online classes
& 1 class that met every Thursday Night. My parents actually enjoyed taking
me, because they got to go out to dinner while I was in school. In the Summer of 2004, I realized I wouldn't be able to go through
all Distance Learning Classes. In fact, I had to go during the daytime. So, As
of September 2004, I became a Full-Time commuter Student at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I take the train from Woodbridge top Convent Station 4 times
a week. It is tiring, but I am basically now in my Senior Year. I knew I would
have to eventually have to take some classes on Campus. Although I would
like to take more classes online!!!
